History and Usage:
The American Heart Association has endorsed omega-3 fatty acids as good for the heart. Through the years, hundreds of studies have established that individuals with diets high in omega-3 fatty acids have less of a risk of heart attack, stroke and abnormal heart rhythms. Two clinical studies concluded that including omega-3 rich foods or supplements in the diet could prevent sudden death from abnormal heart rhythms. Omega-3 fatty acids decrease the LDL (“bad”) cholesterol in your blood while increasing the HDL (“good”) cholesterol helping you control high cholesterol. They also protect the heart by preventing blood clots and keeping other fats from injuring arterial walls.
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is one of the omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are often deficient in the American diet today. Studies indicate that increasing the intake of EPA may provide added protection against coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid essential to the proper functioning of our brains as adults. Lack of sufficient DHA may be associated with impaired mental ability as well as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. Low levels of DHA have also been associated with depression and Alzheimer’s in adults.
Borage (Borago officinialis) oil’s culinary and medicinal usages have been known for over 2000 years although borage seed oil has been used for only the last 10 years or so. Since 1989 almost a dozen clinical studies have examined the medicinal usage of borage with human subjects. The oil is extracted from the seeds by cold pressing and contains omega-6 essential fatty acids. One derivative of omega-6 fatty acids is gamma linolenic acid (GLA). Borage oil is one of the richest known sources of GLA with concentrations of 25-30%.
GLA is an essential fatty acid and is used by the body to produce prostaglandins. During premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or menopause, these hormone-like substances may be out of balance. GLA is helpful for relieving PMS, regulating the menstrual cycle and easing hot flashes and mood swings often associated with menopause. GLA also appears to reduce the adherence of plaque to artery walls, thus lowering the risk of heart disease.
Clinical studies have verified that borage oil may find its greatest value in its anti-inflammatory properties. Research with human subjects has shown borage oil to be useful in treating:
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Atopic eczema
- Raynaud’s syndrome
- Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
Flaxseed oil is one of nature's richest plant sources of essential fatty acids (EFA's). Flaxseed oil is rich in omega-3 in the form of alpha-linoleic acid (ALA). In the body, ALA is converted into two other, more bioavailable fatty acids – eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
Besides omega-3 fatty acids, flaxseed oil contains chemicals called lignans. Scientists believe lignans have antioxidant properties. There is some research in animals, which suggests consumption of flaxseed may reduce the number and size of certain cancers. Further research is ongoing.
