History and Usage:

Studies have shown that lycopene (from ripe tomatoes) helps lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and age-related macular degeneration, and has great promise in dealing with prostate issues. When selecting a lycopene supplement, it is critical that it be of the highest quality. If you are not familiar with lycopene supplements, you may tend to think that all lycopene supplements are basically the same. Vitabase is proud to use a unique extract called Lyc-O-Mato® tomato extract as our supplement. Lyc-O-Mato® is different from other Lycopene extracts because it contains a full spectrum of tomato carotenoids and other nutrients to help benefit good health. The only items missing from tomatoes are the tomato’s natural water and sugar. Lyc-O-Mato® is about as close as you can get to consuming tomatoes.

A diet rich in carotenoids and tocopherols, like those found naturally in Lyc-O-Mato® tomato extract, gives front line support to the antioxidant system as it protects our cells from free radical attack and supports a healthy immune system. Lyc-O-Mato® is clinically proven to support prostate, heart and skin health.

New research, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, indicates that a combination of the natural phytochemicals found in tomatoes, not just lycopene alone, can help lower the risk of deaths resulting from prostate issues.

"We have said all along that synthetic lycopene itself was not solely responsible for reducing prostate problems," said Dr. Zohar Nir. "This study re-confirmed numerous other findings that have shown the beneficial properties of a natural tomato complex containing lycopene plus other necessary tomato phytochemicals: phytoene, phytofluene, natural vitamin E, beta-carotene and phytosterols. Many of those studies have used Lyc-O-Mato®, which is the only standardized, all-natural, tomato complex that delivers these phytochemicals in the tomato's own oil, just as they are found in the whole tomato."

The new study conducted by Thomas W.M. Boileau, Ph.D., of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and Steven K. Clinton, M.D., Ph.D., of the Ohio State University of Columbus, and their colleagues showed that rats fed diets containing whole tomato powder which contains all the important tomato phytochemicals, had a lower risk of death from prostate issues than rats fed diets containing synthetic lycopene or a restricted diet.

Vitabase Lycopene is considered safe because Lyc-O-Mato® is a natural extract of tomato. There are little or no side effects. Nothing has been added to the nutrients found in tomatoes that people have consumed for generations. In addition, Lyc-O-Mato® has undergone extensive checks for safety. An independent evaluation of the safety studies has validated that Lyc-O-Mato® is safe for its intended use as a dietary supplement.
