History and Usage:
Spirulina is one of the richest food sources known to man. Spirulina is 65% protein by composition and contains the B-vitamins, beta carotene, gamma linoleic acid (GLA), iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, zinc and bioflavonoids. Spirulina is considered a complete protein since it contains all the essential amino acids.
Spirulina is actually a blue-green algae commonly found in ponds and lakes. It has been a valuable food source for Mexicans, Asians and Africans for thousands of years. The World Health Organization used it to feed malnourished children in India.
Besides being a good food source, Spirulina has shown benefits in several circumstances. Spirulina is high in gamma linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid used by the body in producing anti-inflammatory agents. Because of this, it has potential use in supporting those with rheumatoid arthritis and diabetic neuropathy. Other studies appear to show promise for Spirulina to enhance the immune system by increasing production of anti-bodies and cytokins (infection fighting proteins). Children living in the Chernobyl area were given Spirulina and showed marked improvement in immune function after 45 days. Other uses under investigation include Spirulina’s effect on asthma, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), allergies, certain oral problems and liver disorders.
Caution:
Keep out of reach of children.
